Last night, I studied with a bunch of my optometry school friends; although I learned a lot from them, I find that it's much harder to focus when you study in a group. It's always soooo easy to get off topic, especially if the material is really difficult and you just don't feel like putting any more effort.

Pictures from the events this past week:
A picture of just about all the guys (there's something like 24 guys in our class!):

A very inspirational quote on one of the buildings at SCCO:

Omega Delta Initiation Banquet:

Yeah, this week was definitely a sleep-deprived week. Although most students can get away with not studying as much, I personally have to study many hours to "get it." But after all of the long hours of studying, the weekend comes and we just go all out. And yes, I'm still doing fine with exams (so far) considering that I've been going out more often than I ever have (maybe even more than undergrad!). So yes, a social life can still exist in optometry school, especially during your first year!

Sigh...just a rant

I still have got to get used to studying every night...this is seriously wearing me out!!! My day is basically go to class all day, then go home at around 4 or 5 to eat dinner then hit the books right away...I usually study until 12. But I guess overall this isn't too bad considering that I'm not quite falling asleep in class yet!!! hehe! Okay time to sleep...g'nite!
Vision Expo in Vegas

Putting out small fires
September 14, 2006
Wow, what a week. On Monday was an Optics exam then just today was a Biochem exam. One of my classmates put this craziness in a good analogy:
We're basically putting out small fires, one after the other. You put out one fire, and another one has already started.
Yes, and the next "fire" will be Anatomy & Physiology (A&P) next week. What was awesome was that since the Vision Expo in Vegas this weekend is optometry-related, the A&P professor was kind enough to push the exam from Monday to Thursday. The funny thing is, we all know that the optometry students aren't going there for the Vision Expo...!
Also coming up is the White Coat Ceremony. SCCO basically recognizes when the students first put on their white coat...we recite the Student Optometric Oath and have the family come over to see it all happen. I don't think it's all that special, but oh well.
Ok, until next post...expect pics from both the Vegas trip and the Vision Expo!

First Exam and More Partying...
September 07, 2006
Soooo today was my first exam. It was Visual Psychophysics...and it was pretty tough. Well, I guess it wasn't too bad considering that I didn't study as hard as I should have. In case you were wondering, this class basically involves the study of visual stimuli (i.e. light, the "physics" part) and how it interacts with our brain (the "psycho" part). Let me tell you though, optometry school is no joke at all. Here at SCCO you really need to be on top of your studying because it's really easy to get behind, especially with exams every week. In fact, next week's exams are Optics (Monday) and Biochem (Thursday). And the Biochem one has nearly a quarter's worth of material in a single exam! But as hard as the classes are, the environment here at SCCO is very supportive and there are a lot of resources to help you succeed e.g. old tests to practice with and very helpful professors.
And so in celebration of getting over our first exam, many of the first years are going out to a club called Bar 330 in Brea, which is very close to Fullerton. So yet again you can see how we study hard and party hard too. You have to balance the studying with some fun once in a while you know?
Next weekend (the 15th-17th) many of the optometry students are going to the Vision Expo in Las Vegas. It's a huge conference for optometrists, optometry students, and people in the eye care industry. And lots of partying too...well what do you expect, it's Vegas!!! Expect to see a post after that weekend with lots of pictures! Okay I'm off to Bar 330 now...until the next post, come by again later!
