Monday
- Practiced some refraction on an older, hyperopic patient – was actually pretty difficult because he was correctable only up to 20/30
- Clinical cases
1. 29 year old female with viral conjunctivitis in the left eye – a type of “pink eye.” The doctor knew it was viral because it has a serous discharge (vs. bacterial, which has a purulent or “goopy” discharge). Treatment was done with supportive therapy and antibiotics. Wait, antibiotics on a virus? Yes, because the virus caused some breaks in the cornea which could lead to bacterial infection!
2. 24 year old male with recurrent Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) flare-ups. When observed in the slit lamp, you can see characteristic scarring on the cornea, and these scars affect the visual acuity.

Hawaii internship - Week 3
June 24, 2007Hawaii Internship - Week 2
June 17, 2007
Here are the highlights of week 2 of my internship here in Hawaii:
Monday (at TAMC):
- I practiced using the Direct Ophthalmoscope (aka the DO) on a patient while he was dilated - it’s MUCH easier to use the DO when the patient’s pupil is dilated.
- I learned the basics of soft contact lens fittings on a patient
- I had my first attempt at using the Binocular Indirect Ophthalmoscope (aka the BIO)…it’s really hard to use and I know that there will be long nights of practicing this in the future!
- I also made a trip to the optical fabrication lab and made several pairs of glasses.

My first week in Hawaii
June 10, 2007
Sorry it's been so long since my last update, I've had very limited internet access here at my hotel. As I mentioned in a previous blog, I am here in Hawaii on Active Duty Training as required by my Army Optometry scholarship (the Army Heath Professions Scholarship Program, or HPSP). I am stationed in Schofield Barracks, which is pretty much in the center of Oahu (one of Hawaii's islands). My main place of work is at the Schofield Barracks Optometry Clinic, but I will be occasionally be going to Tripler Army Medical Center (aka TAMC), which is a major military hospital in the Pacific. I'll be going to that hospital once in a while for optical fabrication, contact lens fittings, and observation of ocular surgeries.
So here is an overview of what I did this week:
